Interview Top Tips
Whether you’re interviewing for your first accounting role or preparing for a senior finance leadership position, a successful interview is about more than just technical knowledge. Employers are looking for candidates who can communicate effectively, demonstrate commercial awareness, and show they will be a valuable addition to the team.
At RK Accountancy, we’ve helped hundreds of finance professionals secure their next role. Here are our top interview tips to help you stand out.
- Answer in outcomes, not duties – Don’t just tell the interviewer what your job was, show them the impact you made. Instead of saying “I prepared monthly management accounts”, explain the result: “I improved reporting accuracy and reduced the month-end process by two days”. Employers hire people who deliver results, so focus on your achievements and the value you added.
- Listen to what they’re really asking – It’s easy to jump straight into an answer, but take a moment to understand the question first. Interviewers are often looking beyond the obvious, they want to understand how you think, solve problems, and communicate. If you’re unsure, don’t be afraid to ask for clarification before answering.
- Study the company – Research the business before your interview so you understand it’s goals, challenges and culture. Rather than simply talking about your skills, explain how your experience can help that company succeed. Demonstrating you’ve done your homework shows genuine interest and helps the interviewer picture you in the role.
- Prepare a 90-second value pitch – One of the first questions you’ll hear is “Tell me about yourself”. Keep your answer concise, relevant and focused on your professional journey. Spend around 90 seconds highlighting your experience, key achievements and what you’re looking for next, finishing with what has excited you about this opportunity.
- Energy matters more than perfection – You don’t need to have the perfect answer to every question. Employers are also assessing your enthusiasm, confidence, and how you’ll fit into a team. Be positive, engaged and authentic throughout the interview. A candidate who shows genuine energy and interest will often leave a stronger impression than someone with rehearsed, textbook answers.
Preparation is often the difference between a good interview and a great one. If you’re looking for your next opportunity, our specialist consultants are here to help! Browse our current vacancies or get in touch for confidential career advice.
